There’s a new place in Belmont Center for high school-aged young adults who enjoy playing computer games, as well as foosball, ping pong, video arcade games and the tabletop game, Magic: The Gathering.
It’s Codemakers, located at 68 Leonard St., Belmont, behind A Chocolate Dream, owned by Belmont resident Rachelle Reinhart.
Reinhart began her business in 2016 with smaller, temporary locations in the summer on Trapelo Road and most recently on Concord Avenue. She was inspired by her 12-year-old son, Alex, who mastered the game Minecraft when he was 10. She thought he would benefit from learning to write coding and began exploring different programs for him to learn it which is how she discovered the Python program currently taught at Codemakers.
Codemakers will teach coding with the Python program, the same program used by MIT. It will be open seven days per week and will be staffed by college students who are proficient in computer programming and will teach introduction to Python. Codemakers will offer workshops and practices and also drop-in time for members.
Membership is month to month and covers all games. Reinhart said students will be able to bring their own laptops and drop in to play games and learn coding. She said it will give them an alternate place to go in Belmont Center to socialize with friends after school.
Summer camps will be offered beginning June 24 from 9 a.m. to noon. After camp, Codemakers will be open from 1 to 7 p.m. During the school year, Codemakers will be open 3 to 7 p.m.
Reinhart said she wants to offer different games than what students would be playing at home. “We are trying to get away from Fortnite central,” she said.
Reinhart’s background is in teaching, although she is also a former CNN producer. She is currently pursuing her Ph.D in sociology from Boston University.
Codemakers will have an open house from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 22. For more information, visit www.codemakers.us.
